Lower School Explores Conservation With Riverbend
Posted 09/10/2015 04:53PM

Lower School students spent Thursday learning about conservation with representatives from Riverbend Environmental Education Center, in preparation for Dr. Jane Goodall’s visit to the school next week.

Students in Kindergarten through fourth grade rotated through four interactive units, learning about watersheds and pollution, the water cycle, and how stream studies demonstrate the health of a body of water. Students also met several animals that live in or near streams.

This year, Lower School plans to establish a Roots & Shoots community action program under the Jane Goodall Institute, a youth-led program that targets specific local challenges in a neighborhood or community, helping people, animals and our shared environment.

“Even young kids can understand the importance of protecting nature,” said David Lowe, an environmental educator at Riverbend. “We feel that if you start very young, they will become stewards as they grow older — they will care more about the environment and realize why we want to protect it, keep our water clean, keep it safe for the animals and for our drinking water.”
